If you’re new here and are interested in joining, first make sure you’re clear about

  1. What is hypothesis, what do we mean by testable hypothesis, experiment, falsifiability
  2. What is prediction, how is it different from hypothesis?
  3. Relationship between prediction and measurement.

Goal of this Group: To build and refine research informed “Adaptive Gamification for Next-Generation Information Systems” (AGNIS)

If you’re new to CTF Lab set up and not sure where to start: https://jise.org/Volume37/n1/JISE2026v37n1pp98-132.html

You basically need three things.

  1. Domain Name Registrar: To manage your purchased domain name and the corresponding IP Address.
    1. From the paper, “Namecheap was the registrar used as it offered low-cost deals (Namecheap, n.d.). Initially, the domain teameffort.work was purchased for $2.17 a year that included the cost to register teameffort.work ($1.99) plus a $0.18 ICANN fee. After the promotional period (two years) expired, the domain’s cost increased to $11.16 a year (less than $1 a month).”
    2. IP Address will resolve to the server hosting CTFs platform.
  2. Get an HTTPS certificate from Let's Encrypt
  3. Either On-Prem Server Storage or Cloud Hosting Provider:
    1. From the paper, they used cloud hosting provider. This solution currently leases an Ubuntu 24.04 LTS server with 1 CPU Core, 2 GB RAM, and 50 GB Storage for $12 a month from the company Linode. Linode was acquired by Akamai Technologies in 2022 and the monthly cost for most plans increased by 20%. This implementation also has backups enabled at a current cost of $2.50 a month.
  4. Open-Source CTF Software:
    1. Your choice of CTF challenge development environment. They used CTFd.

Theory-led Gamification

(Sep 2026 - Current) | Thoughts

Six months past moving from an applied engineering school to a business school, my research has gradually taken a shift in its perspective. For the better part of three years, I observed front-end phenomenon of gamification. After meeting with business school experts, I come across a perspective that this front-end behavioral changes might have been caused by a theoretical explanation. So, I started to see gamification now from a different perspective, a back-end phenomena, or the theoretical explanation (s) behind it.

If you’re also a new faculty member like me, my advice is to keep both ends of the string in your hand, where one end represents all your existing expertise, whereas the other end represents things you still don’t know. It’s my belief that to remain successful, relevant, and fun, you pull both ends of the strings, just in the right proportion every time, resulting in the publication of your research.
